Note to self: Starting a project of the magnitude of 52 Weeks of Impact when you’re going on vacation where internet access is possibly scanty isn’t the wisest of ideas.
I’m shooting this post off as we prepare to set off for the airport bound for South Africa. Sitting in my little home office with my big-a$$ monitor and ergonomically correct keyboard certainly make hours of writing and blog work a breeze. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the little cafe/stationary shop/internet access point in Nottingham Road (the town closest to our farm), will have enough bandwidth that I can upload photos onto this blog. And, if we’re lucky, they’ll have gotten Wi-Fi so I can just use my own laptop. If not on all counts, at least they have really good muffins and coffee to make the wait pass more easily.
The huge advantage to starting this during vacation is that we’ll actually have the luxury of time to have impact, which may be more of a challenge at other times through the year.
Since we’ll be in South Africa and in a very rural area for the beginning of 52 Weeks, the initiatives during the upcoming weeks could center around several themes including:
- the Environment
- Animal Conservation
- AIDs
- Education
But we are open to all possibilities that present themselves. And, as always, suggestions are welcome. More soon.

bagged everything earlier in the week. We were looking at minimal effort. We still eyed each other reluctantly. There’s a perfect phrase in German to describe our state of being this morning: we were both taken over by our “Innerem Schweinehund” (Direct translation: our “inner pig-dog”, closest translation of meaning: our “inner couch potato”). In the end, we hefted our heavier-as-a-result-of-Christmas-meal backsides off the sofa, grabbed up the bags, and headed out the door and onto the street.
Last night at about 2:00 a.m., I was shaken from sleep by a whirlwind of thoughts. It’s no wonder with so many waking hours spent preparing for 52 Weeks of Impact.
