Eco-Friendliness: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

February 4, 2010 by Corinne

The Good:  There is an enormous amount of material out there for those seeking advice on energy-efficiency and eco-friendly lifestyle changes.

The Bad:  There is an enormous amount of material out there for those seeking advice on energy-efficiency and eco-friendly lifestyle changes.

Sifting through it all, trying to determine what information is well-researched and documented, what is generated by financial and commercial interests, and what is “urban legend” has my head spinning. Frankly, we just want to do the good and right thing and we’re finding that it’s no wonder some people throw their arms up and declare, “The hell with it!”

But, as my father would attest, his daughter is stubborn!

We had hoped that this week would be more about action; in fact, this week has been a lot about research and learning.  Not a bad thing, but not what we expected.

What we do know is that we will be changing lighting in our apartment. Approximately two-thirds of our light bulbs are already CFL (compact fluorescent lamps which use only 20 – 33% of the power of equivalent incandescent lamps). And we were going to replace most of the remaining incandescents with CFL. However, thanks to a follower’s suggestion, we’ve decided to replace several incandescents with LED light bulbs. Not only are LEDs even more energy-efficient (using only 10% of what incandescent bulbs use), but they light up immediately unlike CFLs which take time to warm up to their full brightness.  Additionally, they have no mercury — a definite plus. Added Note: Please see Feb 27, 2010 posting for important update on LED lighting results.

In preparation for other possible changes, Nils is measuring our appliance consumption with an electricity usage monitor. It will be particularly interesting to see what each appliance is drawing when put on stand-by. I admit I’m a bit nervous to see what the result will be on our computers!

Which brings me to The Ugly:  I’m near panic to find out what the modem and router for WiFi are sucking. You see, I have my small, but important routine in the morning: At the crack of dawn, I read the news on my iPhone in bed — it’s my “newspaper in the morning” addiction.  And this means that the WiFi is left on all night. (Note guilty tone in voice). I fear I will be making some sacrifices in my morning routine.

To those who have already submitted tips and tricks for our Monthly Impact Challenge, we thank you! Keep the suggestions coming.

For those seeking tips, we are verifying accuracy of those coming in. If nothing else, we hope we can help others to have slightly less difficulty finding good and right solutions for their home.

And, if I have to give up my “morning news in bed,” Nils! You’d better start turning off the lights behind you!

men and turning off the lights! It’s a universal thing lol

I keep my router and wifi on at all times, energy sucking, I know, but I have had a router lose all it’s settings due to power failure and I had to do it all over again. Such a pain in the behind lol

I fear the same problem. But we’ll have to see. I am aghast to have found out how much energy sucking the modem and router are doing. (sorry) Weighing my little luxuries against that is … well, embarrassing.

PS you could put your wifi and router on a timer, so that they turn themselves on 10 minutes before your routine starts :D

A good tip and this may be the route (no pun intended) to go!
