Archive for June, 2010

A week or so ago, nestled in my mailbox among magazines, bank statements, and bills lay a personal letter.  Surprising, in this era of online communication. Aside from a few die-hard friends who still send snail mail Christmas cards and a couple who send birthday wishes, everyone corresponds by email. It’s June, so no Christmas or February birthday wishes.

The letter was from a previous boss and friend of almost 15 years. Since the end of our working relationship, an unlikely friendship somehow has developed between me, him, and his wife.  Back when he was my boss, he was already retirement age and his wife somewhere close behind. Despite the difference in years, our professional origins, and scanty contact (because of my erratic correspondence), they are dear to me for many reasons. Not least among these is that they are just “good people” and a wonderful couple that shares a love and respect to be emulated. (more…)

Our Monthly Impact “Happiness Challenge” is chugging along nicely. As always, we wish there were more people participating, but we send our thanks to all who are getting involved.

We thought we’d share a few tidbits and samples of what some friends and followers have posted, sent to us, added to their Butter Be Happy account, or posted on their own blogs. They certainly put me in a good mood to read. (more…)

I admit it. When I’m heading down a road with my destination in sight, I don’t always see the beauty and opportunities offered along the side of the road. I’m too busy concentrating on that destination. From the first day of this month, my “tunnel vision” has been put to the test. But, I’m learning (slowly) that sometimes following serendipity is just best.

After a lot of research and collection of items, this week’s Effort just fell flat on its face (more on this later). And, now my blood pressure’s rising. We have guests arriving from the United States in four hours, I haven’t yet stocked the refrigerator the way I would like, nor have I assembled a travel “care package.” We’re traveling onward tomorrow, Nils is in Geneva til tonight, and I still have another editing job to finish. I want this visit to be really enjoyable for them. If I weren’t typing away madly right now, I’d be chewing my nails to the quick. With what can I replace this week’s Impact Effort?! (more…)

‘Twas once that defining a friend was simple. A friend used to be someone whose company I enjoyed, someone I’d seek out to spend time with, someone who I could count on and who could count on me. Life’s joys and amusements, trials and tribulations would be shared. We’d laugh and cry together.

Today, I have not only friends, but I have Friends. Admittedly, most of my Friends (via Facebook and LinkedIn) are also friends (those who I’ve touched and hugged and with whom I’ve had too many glasses of wine, too much rich food and laughed til my stomach ached).  But, a few of my Friends are people whom I’ve never met face-to-face. Some I’ve “met” through virtual writers groups, others through online classes, still others through online gaming. I know, some friends poo-poo my Friends and would argue that they aren’t really friends. I beg to differ. (more…)

Last week’s Impact Effort (see Week 22: Pollinating Happiness) was so much fun and got such great response from those friends and followers who participated, we’ve decided to turn it into a month-long event.  So, “5 happy thoughts a day” and “pollinating happiness” are the June Monthly Impact Challenge.

We hope everyone will “play.” As Nils (who was rather skeptical) discovered when he shared his happy thoughts with a colleague, “You know, it really works!”  We don’t stop often enough to think about the things that make us happy and grateful. When we do, the Impact can be great — upon ourselves and others. (more…)

If Impact were judged by variety and creativity, May’s Monthly Impact Challenge of Random Acts of Kindness would certainly get two thumbs up. But, we mostly judge Impact by impact. Based on that criterion, May’s RAoK month was a winner by miles!

Thanks go to everyone who played along with us and submitted RAoK and RAoK ideas. We hope to continue in this spirit beyond the month of May. If you need ideas, please go to our our RAoK blog posting and comments and to our More Ideas Page where you’ll find a colorful array of submissions by friends and followers.

Let’s keep Random Acts of Kindness alive, 12 months a year, 52 weeks a year.

A friend of mine fell upon a funny little website the other day and passed it along. I can’t help but share and make it into this week’s Impact Effort. We hope you’ll consider coming along.

The website is Butter Bee Happy (yes, we agree, it’s a really silly name) and simply put, it’s a free site where you can journal “5 happy thoughts a day.” It’s no secret that we can achieve greater happiness just by taking the time to recognize things that bring joy to our lives. Additionally, Nils and I believe that happiness and gratitude are things that can be contagious — or as the website says, can be “pollinated.” Positive emotions generate positive emotions. (more…)
