Phew! At this writing, I’ve just woken from a three-hour nap following a straight 24-hours of reading. The Dewey 24-Hour Read-a-thon was a fabulous challenge to take on, and I’m particularly proud to say that in the process, we achieved our target goal for raising money for First Book. Thank you to the friends and followers who donated and supported me through the process.

I invite you to take a look at my Read-a-thon blog to see how I/we managed through the sometimes grueling 24-hours. Continue Reading »

Coupon Winners!

While we weren’t exactly bowled over by the number of entries to our Donors Choose coupon contest last week, we were gobsmacked by the words that came in. To say we were moved is an understatement. Our thanks to everyone who participated by responding to: Name one (or more) things that 52 Weeks of Impact has inspired you to do

You’ve certainly motivated and inspired us further!

Here are our four winners chosen at random from the “hat.” Continue Reading »

Just Reading

On Saturday, April 9 at 2 pm my time, I begin a 24-hour Read-a-thon. In a nutshell, I’m committing to staying up for 24-hours, doing “nothing” but reading, blogging about my reading, and participating in reading challenges.

I’m doing this because:

  1. I love reading.
  2. I can. Reading is something I take for granted; knowing the sad statistics on illiteracy, I shouldn’t. Continue Reading »

Our 2010 Classroom

Last year, during Week 17 Impact Kids, through Donors Choose, we donated toward the purchase of books for a school in South Carolina. Recently, as a follow up to our support, we were asked to participate in a brief survey. In return, we received five free! $25 coupons to be used toward any project on their website.

This morning, we used one of these coupons toward a school project called Continue Reading »

Baaa .... Baaaad

Well, we indeed made it through our 12 “Earth HourS” this past Saturday. It was an interesting experiment, some things to be proud of, but we’re also both feeling a bit sheepish.

We chose 6:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 26th, 2011 as our Earth HourS — when we would do our best to be conscious and try not to consume energy. We chose this day and these hours because we knew it would be a “normal day” of tasks focused at home. A day of hiking in the country would show us nothing about our normal home consumption. Earth HourS

Tomorrow, Saturday, March 26th, 2011, at 8:30 p.m. local time, people all around the world will be participating in Earth Hour. Nils and I won’t be able to join in, so we’re going to try something else — a little experiment.

We’re going to do Earth HourS! Starting from the time we normally wake up (around 6:30 a.m.) through until 6:30 pm when we leave to go to friends’ for dinner (hence the non-participation on our part), we’re going to do our best to reduce our energy consumption to its absolute minimum. We’ll see how conscious we can be — and we’ll take note of our “indulgences”, if any. Continue Reading »

When we left you last Sunday with the posting on “Helping Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami Victims“, I was still contemplating how to use my/our personal talents to help raise money for the cause. As I’ve mentioned in earlier postings, I’m not so clever in arts and crafts. So, finding talents I could use to raise money was no simple effort, and frankly, frustrating. This particular disaster hits a personal chord. Though a second-generation born American, I hold a soft spot in my heart for the country of my ancestors. I want to do something extra special to help and support.

What could we do?

After not a small amount of digging about — through my brain and bookcases — I decided on two things that I do well, enjoy doing, and that maybe we could somehow make “monetizable.” Meanwhile, Nils was prepared to look into providing the venue and “market” (his workplace and colleagues at Ernst & Young Austria).
