Knowing that only 1 out of 4 people carry emergency contact information with them, our difficulty getting information from a couple of friends/relatives in order to make wallet-sized emergency cards, shouldn’t have been a surprise. But it still was.

I can’t help but remark that two younger friends in the States couldn’t give me the name of a primary physician, nor could they give me their insurance group plan number. They were at least able to give me the name of their insurance company! But, days later, I still don’t have all the information. Now, “life happens” and I don’t expect that my request is foremost in their minds. However, if the information is that complicated to find, what would happen in an emergency situation? (more…)

The end of the month marks the fourth anniversary of my father’s death. Thankfully, the accident occurred on the grounds of his workplace, so my sister was contacted immediately by grounds security and she, in turn, contacted me.

But, I have wondered what would have happened if dad had had that accident on a public street, in a shopping mall, or in the subway. How much longer would it have taken for us to be notified.

If you or one of your loved ones were to have an accident and be unable to communicate, would an EMT or hospital know who to contact and how? Do you or others have information on your person to make your transition into and stay in the hospital as simple as possible? i.e., blood type, list of allergies, doctor information? (more…)
