Phew! At this writing, I’ve just woken from a three-hour nap following a straight 24-hours of reading. The Dewey 24-Hour Read-a-thon was a fabulous challenge to take on, and I’m particularly proud to say that in the process, we achieved our target goal for raising money for First Book. Thank you to the friends and followers who donated and supported me through the process.

Despite the challenges that recently rained upon us, Week 18 wasn’t a complete wash (Ha ha!). We did, indeed, send a small donation to the National Wildlife Federation to help protect the wildlife and environment impacted by the Gulf oil spill; we also sent off a letter to President Obama asking him to reinstate the ban on offshore drilling; and I sent a note to my senator regarding passing comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation. In the weeks to come, we’ll make good on our commitment to do a clean-up in the park.

The real interesting part of the week came about because Nils was bedridden and desperate for things to do. He went through all the junk mail we receive and confirmed what we had suspected: we get a ridiculous amount of junk mail that has no relevance to our life. Between what was stuffed in our mailbox and what was hung on our front doorknob, we received 1.6 pounds (almost 3/4 of a kilo) in one week. Out of this pile, there was one flyer of interest to us — it’s also one that we get via email anyway. (more…)
